Our FB Readers Dish: The 7 Most Common Online Dating Frustrations
Online dating is a proven, successful way to make real, lasting connections. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of frustrations to contend with.
If you’ve tried online dating, you’re sure to find something familiar in our Facebook users top 7 online dating frustrations.
And just remember - “Online dating can be a mess, but so can meeting a guy in the supermarket.”
1. The Circa 2007
Photos are the first thing most of us notice when we’re online dating. But didn’t you say you were 31, and isn’t that a photo of your college graduation?
One user made us laugh out loud with her impeccable detective skills. “If your daughter is 13… who’s the 4-year-old on your knee in your profile pic?”
2. The No More Mr Nice Guy
“I see you gals complaining but most women meet a nice man who's truthful-they don't want him.” Ouch!
This common complaint had us thinking twice about passing on the next Mr Nice Guy who comes up on our screen.
3. The Waiting Game
Spotting someone who makes you stop and stare is an exciting part of online dating. Reading through their profile, you think of the perfect opener, and craft a funny and interesting first message to sweep them off their feet.
But then… nothing.
Waiting can be really tough, especially because not everyone checks their profile with the same frequency.
Some dating sites, like Elite Singles, now offer Read Receipts on messages so you can know when to hold out for a response, and when to accept that someone just isn’t that into you.
4. The Euphemistically Speaking
The most common dating frustration voiced by our readers has to be singles who are liberal with the truth. Whether it’s your age, how much money you earn, your height and weight or your physical appearance, the comments are all the same.
“I've seen pics and [then] when I meet them they miraculously put on 30 lbs and 10 years! What, you didn't think I'd notice?”
Some dating sites go the extra mile to ensure that what you see is what you'll get. Zoosk has a photo verification badge for users who upload a video selfie, to help prove their photos are the real deal.
Verification tools go a long way in making online dating a more honest experience - which makes it all the more surprising that more dating sites still don't employ some method for verifying photos.
5. The Just Looking
Happily coupled up and ‘just browsing’ to see what's out there?
Hey, we're not judging - but if you're involved with someone else, make sure this is clear in your profile, and disclosed before you meet in person.
No one wants to be the unwitting participant in an open (or broken) marriage.
6. The Grass is Always Greener
This might be the most frustrating complaint of all. You’ve been chatting for a few days or even weeks, and you’re ready to take the chemistry offline. Suddenly, your crush disappears! They stop replying to messages and never seem to be online.
Unfortunately, online dating can be addictive. Some people prefer to stay in that initial ‘getting to know you’ phase. Once they get a few messages in, they spy another profile which looks more appealing and move right onto the next.
Just don't let it get you down - it's happened to the best of us.
7. The Cliché
“Did you hurt yourself when you fell from heaven, angel?” Instant alarm bells ring for any seasoned online dater who gets a first message this cheesy.
Same goes for a profile filled with the same old clichés that could describe anyone. Looking for a girl with a great sense of humor who loves to travel. Seeking a guy who is honest, kind, and physically active.
Raise your game a little! We're all tired of seeing the same profile info and having to respond to the same boring messages.
Online dating does have its frustrations. But keep at it, because the one who will have made it all worthwhile may just be a match away,
